Premier Puts Up Welcome Signs for 1 Million Tourists
15 Oktober 2004
BRON: Premier van die Wes-Kaap (Wes-Kaapse Provinsiale Regering)
Premier Rasool joined the community of Hawston, the Overstrand Mayor Mr Willie Smuts, the Anglican Church's development arm (Hope Africa), the Foundation for Contemporary Research and Grenhaus Architects yesterday afternoon in marking progress at the Hawston Beach Resort, a joint project to develop an integrated community resort on the municipal Hawston Camping Ground. The Provincial Government is contributing a total of R 300 000 to the first phase of this project.

The Premier spoke as follows: "Some 1 million visitors will soon come to our Province. They come here because Africa has a very human heart and incredible environmental beauty. In the Western Cape our unique natural beauty and the distinctive humanity and generosity of our people provide our guests with a place of restoration and good memories. Let us put up the 1 million welcome signs that will make every guest feel embrace and appreciated in the Home for All.

"The tourist industry is a key driver for our growth and development. But as the boom levels we will have to compete on more equal terms with other destinations. Simultaneously, we must ensure the ongoing sustainable development of the industry and expand its base so that more people can benefit.

"We cannot stand by to watch unscrupulous hotels, restaurants, agencies and amenities go for short term gain at the long term expense of the industry. I call upon all involved in tourism not to be overwhelmed by short term profits in an industry that demands our long term investment. We must offer a consistently memorable experience of our best natural and human qualities, keep our prices reasonable and provide universally excellent service typical of the Western Cape.

"Through investments such as research into developing the Kleinmond Harbour, the new Agulhas Road and Haswton, Government is signaling its long term commitment to open up more parts of the Province to tourists. Increasing black economic empowerment in the industry, its contribution toward sustainable development and job creation are vital parts of this package.

"The project in Hawston aims to direct profits generated from the resort towards future social, environmental and development work within the community. Where Hawston was recently considered a poachers paradise, it can now be marketed as one of the few places in the world where you could legally eat fresh Abalone. I call on Minister van Schalkwyk to assist in the sustainable development of Hawston by aligning the marine resource management process to Hawston's tourist and environmental preservation plan."

The Premier also called on the SAPS in the person of Commissioner Ganief Daniels to ensure the safety of all guests during the peak season.
