The mobile facilities, or "helicopter schools", as they are commonly known, will also include toilet and administration facilities and are erected in "hot spot" areas where the situation with educational facilities is currently very critical. Nicky van Staden and his Public Works: Education team are responsible for drafting specifications and putting the project out on tender. "Apart from giving contractors the opportunity to tender according to our user specification format, we also have to evaluate the tenders and make sure that the services are delivered according to our standards," he said.
Public Works is currently delivering mobile classrooms in the Cape Peninsula, on the West Coast and the South Coast. In some cases, mobile classrooms are being erected at places as far away as Murraysburg in the Karoo, and Plettenberg Bay.
David Williams, Chief Industrial Engineer, said that all the sites have to be levelled and compacted before the classrooms can be delivered for occupation. "This can take time, and as you know, the weather also plays a role," he said.

Bongani Msi, learner at the Mkwenkwezi School in De Noon thanks David Williams, Bernadine van Schalkwyk and Nicky van Staden from the Western Cape Provincial Public Works branch who played an important role to see that his school received the mobile classrooms (in the background) that will immediately alleviate the shortage of classroom space.
According to quantity surveyor Bernadine van Schalkwyk, who did the cost controlling, the project is worth an estimated R38 million and will see the delivering of mobile classrooms to 33 locations across the Western Cape.
