The recent problems with the e-NaTIS system have led to difficulties being experienced at all the City's traffic centres.

According to the City of Cape Town's traffic management, the problem does not lie with staff, but rather that the intermittent shutdowns substantially delay the computer capture of transactions. They now take between eight and 20 minutes to process. This results in long queues and perpetuates an ongoing backlog.

According to Metro Police Deputy Chief, Heathcliff Thomas, the e-NaTIS shutdowns have created a general public perception that there is a blanket amnesty on paying traffic fines. We would like to make it clear that fines such as speed and moving violations, as well as vehicle defects must still be paid. The City is still prosecuting those fines as before.

Those who would like to query the fines affected by e-NaTIS - especially fines for expired vehicle and driver's licences - can make representations and each case will then be dealt with individually on its merits.
