| By: Malusi Rayi On 18 August 2007, Provincial Government officials including MEC's from various departments, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) employees and inmates of the Department Correctional Services laid the first brick of the house for a Khayelitsha family whose six year old girl was raped. The mother of the girl is blind and the father is mentally disabled. Speaking at the media briefing, Mr. Balfour Ngconde, National Minister for Correctional Services acknowledged his department, sponsors such ABSA Bank, M5 builders and Provincial Government Western Cape for their initiative. "This has lifted us as the department and it touches ones heart when you doing something for a disadvantaged person." On this day, the beneficiary who can not be named for security reason was also present. Mr. Ebrahim Rasool, the Premier of Western Cape was among high profile people who took part in the building of the house. Rasool said the Western Cape Province has a 400 000 housing back log and the initiative is such a good example if the province is to address this challenge. "What we doing here is a good signal of the Home For All principle and this forms part of correcting the past," the Premier said. The plight of this family was covered by SABC news earlier in July. The public broadcaster also engaged with other government departments such as Correctional Services, Provincial Government Western Cape to partake in the initiative of relocating the family to a new home. Corporates such as ABSA Bank M5 Builders and Alsa Magwebu committed to support the initiative. The Provincial Government Western Cape together with SABC, Correctional Services and Corporate sponsors are the official partners of this initiative. The house will be official handed to the beneficiary on 7 September 2007. | ![]() Mr. Snuki Zikalala, Head of SABC news (left) with Mr. Balfour Ngconde, Minister of Correctional Services assited during the building of the house. ![]() Provincial Government Western Cape high profile officials and other partners took part in the brick laying of the house. From left were Mr. Faizel Motlekor Manager M5 Builders, Marius Fransman, Richard Qubudile Dyantyi, Ebrahim Rasool Snuki Zikalala and Kholeka Mqulwana. |
