"The latest spate of incidents at Cape Town's most recognisable attraction will not be tolerated. I am confident that Minister Ramatlakane's "Safer Festival Season" campaign and the efforts of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in managing these cases will ensure that the safety of visitors to our Mountain as well as other key attractions in our City will remain a top priority.
The problems currently being experienced on Table Mountain are being tackled by a range of stakeholders and tourism authorities. All available resources within Cape Town are being used to address the situation in and around Table Mountain as well as other key attractions, with a special crime prevention task team deployed to ensure the ongoing safety of visitors and local Capetonians.
The Cape Town Partnership has also deployed 20 additional security staff to major events within the CBD during the festive season. The Central City Improvement District (CCID) is working closely with the SAPS, City Police and City Council Law Enforcement Officers which all have additional security forces in the CBD.
Added to this, the safety and security task team is also taking the necessary steps to ensure that the people involved will receive the proper treatment and will be well taken care of."
Lynne Brown will make an announcement today, which will launch a "Tourist in Distress" campaign. The main aim of the campaign is to ensure that in the event of any misfortune befalling a visitor to our beautiful Province, they would know who to contact for assistance. The campaign includes an extensive marketing drive to popularise the emergency numbers of police, emergency services, ambulance services, and Provincial Government. More details with regard to further tourism safety measures will be released at the media conference today. The MEC calls on the community of Cape Town and the Western Cape to unite in order to make our City and Province a safe place for all.
