Call on Communities to Assist with Donations for the Kosovo Community in Weltevreden North
DEUR: Cobus Dowry
IN: Cape town
2 September 2003
Statement by Cobus Dowry, Minister of Local Government and responsible for Disaster Management in the Western Cape after an on-site visit to the Kosovo Community in Weltevreden North flooded in the storm of 1 Sept 2003.

Although the area is severely affected the City of Cape Town is currently dealing with the storm damage in the metropolitan area and our impression is that the preparation and proper planning beforehand resulted in efficient management of problem areas.

On behalf of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape I have expressed sympathy to those whose lives have been affected by the flooding. They and their families will receive both our prayers and our swift material and other support.

It is my understanding however that the NGO's who assist with disaster relief urgently require:

  • proper blankets
  • clothes, especially children's clothing
  • tin food
  • baby food especially formula milk.

I am therefore urging the people of the Western Cape to come forward and assist those in desperate need. The following NGO's can be contacted:

The Salvation Army 021 689 8915
South African Red Cross 021 797 5360
SANZAF - The South African National Zakah Fund 021 638 5108

Various radio stations in the Western Cape are also assisting with the drive for donations and must also be supported.

Once again we must express our thanks and gratitude to the NGO's and volunteers who are working non-stop to alleviate the plight of those affected in the storm water.
