The aim of the Department of Correctional Services is to contribute towards maintaining and protecting a just, peaceful and safe society, by:

• enforcing court-imposed sentences
• detaining prisoners in safe custody
• promoting the social responsibility and human development of all prisoners and those subject to community corrections.

The Department's core business is the safe custody and supervision of offenders. It practices risk management in respect of offenders and acknowledges and applies the concept of humanity and human rights regarding all stakeholders.
