Groote Schuur Museum
DESCRIPTION:
On 3 December 1967 a momentous event occurred at Groote Schuur Hospital which captured the imagination of the world : the world's first human heart transplant was performed. This remarkable feat, achieved by a dedicated and gifted team led by Professor Christiaan Barnard, has been commemorated by the establishing of a museum on the site of the actual theatre where this operation took place. The Charles Saint Theatre suite, named after the much respected first Professor of Surgery of the Medical Faculty of the University of Cape Town, has been restored to its original state and contains many items of historical interest and memorabilia relating to the first heart transplant and the history of the hospital in general. The entrance fee is R10 for adults and R5 for scholars. |
