What do we want to do?

The Ikapa Elihumayo GDS has 8 key aims or strategic objectives

1. Broader economic participation:
  • Aim skills development at carefully targeted groups
  • Make human, infrastructural and financial investment

2. Efficient infrastructure that connects people:
Stimulate and sustain economic growth through transport (eg roads, rail links), energy, information communication technology (ICT) and other kinds of infrastructure (eg public amenities and buildings)

3. Effective public and non-motorised transport:
Ensure safe access and mobility to all citizens, especially the poor and those cut off from income opportunities

4. Liveable communities:
Ensure that human settlements are sustainable and integrated with other developments

5. Strong and creative communities:
  • Try to encourage social unity
  • Connect communities so that they work together and support each other

6. Spatial integration:
Overcome apartheid separation of communities from each other and from workplaces by developing conveniently located land for living, working and recreating, and limiting urban sprawl

7. A culture of tolerance and mutual respect:
Recognise social and cultural diversity, and use the strengths of our differences to bring people together

8. Effective government institutions:
Set up, maintain and run government offices and helpful services effectively at provincial and local level
