First Sitting of the Third Parliament of the Western Cape

On Monday, 26 April 2004, at 11h00, the newly elected Members of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament met for the first time.

The Judge President of the Cape Division of the High Court, Mr J Hlope, presided over the swearing of all the new and returning Members afterwhich nominations for the Premier were called. Mr Ebrahim Rasool of the African National Congress was the only candidate nominated and therefore duly declared Premier of the Province.

Mr Shaun Byneveldt, also from the ANC, was duly elected as the new Speaker and Mr Piet Meyer from the New National Party was elected as the Deputy Speaker. Mr Rasool will be sworn in as the new Premier on Friday, 30 April 2004.
