Western Cape Education MEC Cameron Dugmore has condemned the stabbing of a 16-year-old learner in the neck, the second such incident this week on school premises.

The learner, Mfundo Mgoqi, is in a critical condition in the Tygerberg Hospital. Police are looking for a fellow 17-year-old learner, who has since been missing.

Apparently an argument ensued between the two grade 10 learners during a lesson in class and the teacher intervened. When the interval followed, the argument continued. It is believed that the stabbing took place during this time.

Mgoqi is still in hospital and his parents were informed. Statements were made to the police who are still looking for the perpetrator. The principal will soon provide the department and the MEC with a detailed written report.

In his reaction, MEC Dugmore says he is going to review the disciplinary code for schools, and wants all schools to be weapons free-zones.

"No weapons of any kind should be allowed onto school premises. I will meet with the senior management of the department to ensure compliance.

"Students and parents need to understand the consequences of learners conducting themselves violently.

"My thoughts are with the Mgoqi family, and I just hope that Mfundo will survive this ordeal."

In an earlier incident on Tuesday (17 August), an 18-year-old learner from the Matthew Goniwe High School in Khayelitsha was stabbed to death in front of the whole class after a squabble involving three pupils.

Two fellow 16-year-old learners appeared in court in connection with the killing of Mzimasi Marhwanqana and were released into the custody of their parents.
