Minister Ramatlakane was accompanied by Provincial CommissionerMzwandile Petros, senior police officials and newly appointed Head ofthe Railway Police Unit, Superintendent Goss.
Bambanani Neighbourhood Watch train volunteers and Metrorail policewere also part of the operation that started at the Khayelitsha station.
Minister Ramatlakane said," This operation is in line with our SaferFestive Season Programme to make our people feel safe wherever they are.
"Therefore our trains must also be made safe for our people tocommute on. Today is the last day of the month and the year, andtherefore our law enforcement agencies, led by Provincial CommissionerPetros, will be on full alert on the trains and they will be highlyvisible to ensure that commuters arrive at their homes safely with theirbelongings intact."
The operation will continue throughout the day along the railway linesof Mitchell's Plain, the Southern Suburbs, and the route from CapeTown to Wellington.
