The Western Cape Minister of Tourism and Gambling, Joyce Witbooi, tonight honoured women in tourism in this province who over the years have not received public recognition for their commitment to tourism, but who, in their own quiet way contributed significantly to tourism development.
Set to become and annual event, it was held in the Bo-Kaap at Marco's African Place with well-known radio personality, Shado Twala as MC and two women bands performing - the Women Unite Marimba Band and Madame Afrique.
In her address to more than 300 guests, Minister Witbooi, who made the keynote address, awarded twelve nominees, of which one was a post-humous award. Minister Witbooi pointed out that she did not announce winners. "It's not about the best. It's about recognizing unsung stars for their contribution to tourism and job creation."
The twelve women (in alphabetical order) are: Glenda Appies of Saldanha, Debbie Bruce of George, Dale Isaacs of Crawford, Maria Maile of Khayelitsha, Emmah Makatu of Milnerton, Hanli Matthysen of Swellendam (posthumous award), Marian Mercuur of Worcester, Cheryl Mulder-Verbruggen of Cape Town, Shareen Parker of Cape Town, Itumeleng Pooe of Cape Town, Maureen Wicomb of Oudtshoorn and Rose Willis, previously from Beaufort-West.
In her address Minister Witbooi said "We are honouring the women who over the years have not received public recognition for their commitment to the tourism cause, but who, in their own quiet way contributed significantly to the development of tourism - not for their own sake or that of their businesses, but for the benefit of those around them and within the broader community.
"These women are often assuming the unglamorous roles, not usually picked up by the media, in a tourism industry that covers a broad spectrum; including development, marketing and entrepreneurship. The twelve nominees are from all walks of life and through their individual efforts, they stand out in their achievements.
Tonight is about honouring their efforts, which often go unmentioned. They do not have a media profile. They are more concerned with action and impact, rather than communicating their challenges and successes.
The twelve nominees serve as an inspiration to all women in the Western Cape, from the rural areas to the city - they show that tourism works and works well.Issued by: Western Cape Ministry of Tourism and Gambling
