28 April 2005
SOURCE: Presidency (The Government of South Africa)
Deputy President Jacob Zuma will, on Saturday 30 April 2005, revisit the communities of Bonteheuwel, Cape Town and surrounding areas as a follow-up to visit to the area on 3 June 2003.

The visit is aimed at providing the community with a progress report, especially from provincial government, on issues raised by the communities during the last visit.

Complaints highlighted by the communities of Bonteheuwel, Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Ravensmead, Langa and Gugulethu had included:

  • Children and adults being killed and maimed by the crossfire of gangs, and invasion of schools by gangs;
  • The killing of members of the community who are witnesses in criminal cases;
  • Criminals are released into communities without the Community Police Forums and relevant organisations and community structures being informed;
  • Bonteheuwel is in desperate need of a police station;
  • Unemployment is rife and the community needs greater support from government regarding the funding of job creation projects;
  • A need to address issues of moral regeneration, values and norms in the communities.

The Deputy President will be accompanied Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool, MEC for Community Safety Leonard Ramatlakane and other provincial MECs as well as the Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Ms Nomaindia Mfeketo.

Enquiries: Zanele Mngadi at 082 781 9332
Issued by the Presidency, Pretoria
