Somerset West has a long history of lighting up the Helderberg with this much-loved annual tradition, initiated in 1962 by the then Town Engineer, Mr Joss Kerr. The spectacle of Main Road and Victoria Street being transformed into a fairyland has consistently drawn residents and visitors together to enjoy the message of peace and goodwill glowing in the festive lights.
The lights this year are spectacular. New light motifs have been added to complement the established favourites. The main event will boast a colourful parade of bands, floats and the VIP cavalcade, leading into the programme for the night. Traders have been invited to set up their stalls, providing interest and entertainment for the whole family.
Helderberg is delighted to welcome the Speaker of the City of Cape Town, Alderman Gavin Paulse as our guest of honour. Alderman Paulse will switch on the lights at 20:00 in Main Road, Somerset West, marking the start of what promises to be a glorious holiday season.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for all of Cape Town to come together in celebration of our beautiful, world class region. We warmly invite all our people of the Helderberg area and surrounding communities to join in the festivities that have been planned." says Alderman Paulse.
