Riverine Rock Rabbit found in Karoo RegionA team of 25 field workers consisting of CapeNature staff, Cape Peninsula University of Technology students, EWT (Endangered Wildlife Trust) staff, a Mazda Wildlife Fund sponsored bakkie and two horses made up the full complement of this rabbit-seeking taskforce.
Two days were spent on Slangkrantzrivier/Keurfontein where seven riverine rabbits were found. This is the furthest south that a population has been found so far. The group also stayed overnight at the Ibhadi Game Lodge where eight riverine rabbits were found. This represents the first population found north of the N1 in this part of the Karoo. There have been rumours that riverine rabbits, originating from Victoria West, were released in the Ceres Karoo 25 years ago.
With the fortunate find of a clump of rabbit hair on Ibhadi, this rumour will hopefully be verified once the genetic results of tissue samples are received. Without the co-operation and generosity of Johan Delport, Jaap Koetser, Chris Baard and Piet Uys, the survey in this area could not have taken place. CapeNature encourages others to keep an eye on the rabbits on their properties and to inform us when they spot what may be a riverine rabbit.
