Mayor Hellen Zille (centre), Fatima Allie, Itheko and Dr Salie Abrahams of International Peace University of South Africa at the Launch of Islam 2006The current global situation, dramatized by the furore surrounding thecartoon of the Holy Prophet [PBUH], has created a very real urgency for a'Discover Islam' Exhibition. The driving force behind such an exhibition isthe need to dispel the myths of Islam in particular and Muslims in generaland in so doing help the rest of the country understand who Muslims are and what Islam is all about.
This has given birth to the concept of Discover Islam an initiative of theMuslim Students Association [MSA].
The broad objectives of first annual Discover Islam Exhibition are to:
- promote a spirit of religious and cultural tolerance;
- rectify erroneous perception surrounding Islam and Muslims;
- create an understanding of the women's rights in Islam;
- create an awareness of the role played by Muslims in the history of South Africa;
- present the concepts of Islamic finance and investment; and
- present the Islamic solutions to the AIDS pandemic.
The event has attracted a huge interest both locally and internationally and we are privileged to announce that the following internationally recognised Muslim speakers will be attending and delivering papers at Discover Islam 2006. They are:
- Dr Jamal Badawi
