When 700 local government leaders met in Cape Town in February/March 2006 for the ICLEI World Congress on Sustainability, many brought with them a soccer ball bearing the insignia of his or her town or city.

Some 150 soccer balls from approximately 40 countries including Australia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Canada and Uganda are to be donated to the Nelson Mandela Peace Park in Delft which strives to promote sport and recreation, in addition to other life skills in an area where few developmental opportunities previously existed.

The Park hosts various social development projects in Delft and neighbouring communities. One such initiative involves providing under-resourced schools with soccer balls in order to teach children new skills.

The soccer ball hand over will be a focal point of the function to thank those partners who contributed to the World Congress. The function will be addressed by Cape Town's Executive Mayor, Helen Zille. Details of the function are as follows:
