Make Way For Emergency Vehicles

Every day emergency vehicles respond to urgent calls for help from the public. Critical seconds can be lost if drivers don't make way for emergency vehicles by - moving to the left. Take sirens seriously and make way for an ambulance, fire engine or police vehicle.

So next time you encounter such a situation, yield to the right and let them through. Your quick reaction can help safe a life!

How Can You Help?

DO

1. Stay calm. Observe your surroundings and prepare to react;

2. Immediately drive to the lift side of the road and stop;

3. If you cannot move all the way to the left side of the road, then move as far to the right as you can and stop;

4. Stay clear behind emergency vehicles that are using their lights and sirens.

DON'T

1. Don't pull to the right. Always move to the left;

2. Don't stop in an intersection;

3. Don't stop in the lane you are travelling in. move to the left - then stop;

4. Don't disregard the presence of the emergency vehicle by continuing to drive

IN CONGESTED AREAS

If you DO NOT SEE the flashing lights:

  • Slow down;
  • Turn your radio volume down;
  • Check your mirrors frequently;
  • Stay focused and anticipate the emergency vehicle;
  • DON'T enter an intersection until it's clear.

YOU'LL BE FINED

Any violation of "Yielding to Emergency Vehicles" carries a fine of R500 or in the instances of recklessness or willful obstruction such a motorist can be arrested for obstructing an officer in execution of their duties i.t.o. Regulations 308(1)(h) of the National Road Traffic Regulations (2000), made under the National Road Traffic Act, Act 93 of 1996.
