Deputy Mayor Unveils Maynardville Plaques
4 December 2006
SOURCE: City of Cape Town
Two handcrafted heritage plaques for Maynardville Park are to be unveiled by Deputy Mayor Andrew Arnolds, at a special ceremony on 5 December 2006, to mark the end of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Open-Air Theatre.

One of these ceramic plaques stands on the site of the original Maynardville Villa, occupied by James Maynard from 1836 until his death in 1874. After it was damaged by fire, Maynardville was rebuilt by Maynard's nephew, William Farmer and remained as the family home until it was sold to the Cape Town Municipality in 1949 who preserved the grounds as a public park.

The second plaque is placed at the entrance to the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, which was established in February 1956 and has become a popular venue for Shakespearean performances.

The plaques were designed and crafted by local sculptor, Tanya Babb, using clay from the area.

Deputy Mayor Arnolds will be accompanied by Councillor Neil Ross and Christa le Roux, Director: City Parks.
