Cape Care Route Showcases Sustainable Development Projects for Tourists
21 June 2006
SOURCE: City of Cape Town
The Cape Care Route is a local tourism initiative that showcases projects that promote sustainable development in a practical way. The route was initially established as a side event for the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg in 2002, but over time this project has grown to include a range of local projects.

A new Route Forum will be established at a general meeting to be held on Thursday, 22 June 2006 at 15:00 at the Edith Stephens Wetlands Park. There is also a proposal for appointing a new route co-ordinator to assist with the marketing and development of the route.

The City of Cape Town undertook a full evaluation of the route during 2005 to determine its feasibility. The evaluation panel included representatives from the City, Cape Town Tourism, Cape Town Routes Unlimited and the Civil Society City-Wide Forum. The panel visited some of the destinations and evaluated all the applications that were received following a public call for participation. It was found that while the route was a great idea, it required support to enable growth and destination development.

The following destinations are now part of the Cape Care Route:

  • BEN Bicycle Workshop, Masiphumelele
