Western Cape Celebrates Africa Day

Africa Day was established by a resolution of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on the day of the OAU's constitution on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This year, 2006, is the 43rd anniversary of Africa Day and has been declared as the year of African Languages.Ten years ago, on 8 May 1996, President Thabo Mbeki (then Deputy President) delivered his now famous "I'm an African" speech, following the adoption of the South African Constitution.

"I am an African."

"It is a firm assertion made by ourselves that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white."

"It rejoices in the diversity of our people and creates the space for all of us voluntarily to define ourselves as one people."

"I am an African. I am born of the peoples of the continent of Africa."

The Western Cape, together with the rest of South Africa, will be celebrating Africa Day on Thursday 25 May 2006 and at the same time the tenth anniversary of our country's Constitution.

Join us at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for a free concert celebrating the cultural diversity of Africa and South Africa.
