The Process: Inviting Artists to Participate

After weeks of thorough research and wide-ranging consultations the names of ten of South Africa's top artists were identified by the Nobel Square Technical Committee (NSTC) and recommended to the Nobel Square Project Committee (NSPC).

They were:

  • Bonita Alice
  • Andries Botha
  • Peter Hall
  • Noria Mabasa
  • Isaac Makaleni
  • Johannes Maswanganyi
  • Anton Momberg
  • Claudette Schreuders
  • Johannes Segogela
  • Willem Strydom

The ten artists, from as far as Limpopo, Port Elizabeth and the Karoo, were invited to Cape Town for a two-day briefing and orientation session, as well as a site visit to Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront where the sculptures will be erected.

They also had the option of visiting a Cape Town foundry.

After the public announcement of their names on 5 March 2004, the artists were invited to submit small models (maquettes) and/or drawings of their proposals for the Project to the NSTC within more than a month's time. Eight of the artists indicated their willingness to participate in the Project and submitted maquettes of one or more of the Laureates, as well as some proposals for Nobel Square.
