Social Capital in Department of Social Development

The Department of Social Development acknowledge the fact that dedicated actions containing social and human capital elements guided our operations and strategic directions for many years.

This department has achieved, fostering the world outlook of ubuntu, strengthening networks, societal norms and values, partnerships that contribute to iKapa elihlumayo, poverty reduction, civic responsibility, community driven development, solidarity, racial integration and the comprehensive delivery of our social safety net during time of crisis.The Department of Social Development has committed R 9.87 million of funding (2006-7 financial year) to facilitate the Social Capital Projects.

In the light of the challenges of poverty and social exclusion we crafted a strategy for Social Capital formation as an appropriate response. The strategic focus relates to:

  • Families and children/specifically early childhood development (ECD) and children headed households
  • Youth development and substance abuse
  • Older persons ' launch of Golden Games in Oudtshoorn on 29th September-1st October 2006
  • Disabled persons
  • HIV

In executing our social capital projects our partnerships include Artscape Resource Centre, Community Healing Network, Ethical Leadership, Justice and Peace Commission, Cape Nature, EFSA, Certificate of Youth Trainer, Brawam Siswam, Jikeleza, Gun Free Society and Children Resource Centre.

The other government departments who WALK THE TALK with us are the department of the Premier, Community Safety, Local Government and Housing, Health, Education, Sport and Cultural Affairs, Public Works and Transport, Provincial Treasury, University of Western Cape, University of Cape Town and the City of Cape Town.

The Department of Social Development strives fostering and enhancing the implementation of BEE, NON -RACISM, COMMUNITY REGENERATION AND SOCIAL COHESION.
