The Provincial Department of Local Government's role in disaster management is to support the 30 municipalities in the Western Cape to develop a disaster management plan for the area in their jurisdiction. It is my considered opinion that the City of Cape Town as the primary implementing agent in the disaster recovery process in their jurisdiction has learned with past experience and has planned accordingly. In this they were assisted by the Provincial Government of the Western Cape.
One must however not be blind for the need of those affected and the City together with provincial departments will once again assist where possible and where the need arises. With some more cold and wet weather on its way, the City of Cape Town has assured me of its continued preparedness and we will continue to monitor the situation.Visit to Flooded Areas
I have this afternoon visited the Wallacedene (Mooitrap) and Kosovo areas which were affected in the rains of the last couple of days. I have spoken to some of the residents and I have met with officials of the City of Cape Town. On behalf of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape I have expressed sympathy to those whose lives have been affected by the flooding. They and their families will receive both our prayers and our swift material and other support.
