Tomorrow, the Western Cape - Provincial Development Council (PDC) will convene a summit to deal with the escalating food prices and will highlight a set of interventions which are aimed at easing the burden of rising food prices in the province as well as also providing a platform for dialogue amongst stakeholders, which includes Civil Society, Government, Organised Labour and Organised business.

The objectives of the Food Summit are to:

• urgently and immediately reduce current excessive food prices
• create Food Security
• deliver a moratorium on suspension of basic services to poor communities
• deliver a moratorium on any general price increases, such as public transport, electricity, school fees, and
• to develop a macro statement by all role players, defining a joint position on areas such import parity pricing, interest rates increases, etc.

The Food Summit, which was announced on the 29th May, is a culmination of various work streams and includes work completed in the following sector:

• Farming Cluster
• Retailers / Wholesalers
• Short Term Support Cluster
• Civil Society Cluster
• Basic Services Cluster; and
• Land Issues Cluster.

Premier Ebrahim Rasool will deliver a keynote address.
