The objectives of the Food Summit are to:
- urgently and immediately reduce current excessive food prices
- create Food Security
- deliver a moratorium on suspension of basic services to poor communities
- deliver a moratorium on any general price increases, such as public transport, electricity, school fees, and
- to develop a macro statement by all role players, defining a joint position on areas such import parity pricing, interest rates increases, etc.
The Food Summit, which was announced on the 29th May, is a culmination of various work streams and includes work completed in the following sector:
- Farming Cluster
- Retailers / Wholesalers
- Short Term Support Cluster
- Civil Society Cluster
- Basic Services Cluster; and
- Land Issues Cluster.
Premier Ebrahim Rasool will deliver a keynote address.
