Integrated Serviced Land Project (iSLP)
OBJECTIVE:
The iSLP is a R1.4 billion (US$200m) development project primarily aimed at addressing the socio-economic needs of 40,000 families living in informal settlements in and around Cape Town.

DESCRIPTION:

The project is unique in that it serves these communities in an integrated fashion by providing for their housing, education, health, economic and human development needs in a coordinated way.

The iSLP is located within a fixed boundary on the Cape Flats - the sandy area that stretches from the Cape Peninsula inland to the mountains of the Boland and the Hottentots Holland. The developable area of the project aggregates to about 800 hectares.

    The project involves building:
  • 40,000 housing units
  • 48 new or upgraded schools (943 new classrooms)
  • 14 clinics
  • 12 community halls
  • four libraries
  • nine sports facilities.
    There is also a capacity building aspect to the iSLP which includes:
  • early childhood development
  • economic development
  • environmental projects, including "greening"
    The participants in the project are:
  • 29 communities
  • national and provincial government
  • local government
  • community-based organisations
  • utility companies
  • non-government organisations
  • consultants.
