The Multiplication of Seed for Use in the Biological Restoration of Degraded Veld
OBJECTIVE:
This project's objectives are the collection and multiplication of indigenous seed for use in veld restoration and improvement.
START:
2000
END:
2003
STATUS:
Underway
DESCRIPTION:

Degradation and desertification are two of the most important threats to our natural vegetation in arid and semi-arid areas.

Different attempts have been made to restore degraded areas. To restore these areas seed of indigenous species are needed. Seed of only four different species indigenous to the Western Cape is commercially available.

This project is testing the seed of potential species that can be used in restoration efforts. These tests include germination tests in seeding trays in a nursery, as well as tests to break the dormancy of the seeds.

Seed of species showing good potential to be used in veld restoration and -improvement will be multiplied and made available for such works.
