Assessment of Veld Management Practices for Livestock, Ostrich and Game Farming in the Little Karoo
OBJECTIVE:
This research project aims to:
  • Determine veld management practices for livestock, game and ostrich production in the Little Karoo.
  • Assess current management practices in relation to legislation and recommendations by extension and conservation services.
  • Assess veld conditions in livestock, ostrich and game camps in Little Karoo.
START:
2002
END:
2004
DESCRIPTION:

QUESTIONNAIRE

A random sample was selected for the study consisting of 20% or more of all livestock and ostrich farmers in the Little Karoo region, whose farms each consist of 40% or more of natural grazing areas.

Interviews will be conducted with agricultural advisors and conservationists to determine the current recommendations for extensive grazing management of veld for livestock, wildlife and ostrich production systems and the implementation and enforcement of the current conservation legislation.

VELD ASSESSMENT

Two veld assessments were performed on each farm, one 100m from a water point or feeding bin (in the case of ostriches) and another 500m away.

An adapted veld assessment form of Milton and Dean (1995) was used, which is an effective quick visual method of scoring the veld condition.
