The project will serve as a pilot project for the future rollout of a GIS strategy to other areas in the Western Cape, specifically in terms of the planning requirements for the sub-directorate: Resource Conservation. The mapping (at 1:10 000 scale) of present land use will form the foundation of the project, from which the various participants, including the land users themselves, will have input into planning future land use. The planning will take into consideration the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Spatial Development Framework (SDF) of the local authority, and from a GIS perspective will occur in close liaison with SANPARKS, Western Cape Nature Conservation and the Overberg District Municipality. An essential part of this project from an agricultural perspective is the sensitive and meticulous planning and negotiation involved in land zoning, which requires that the best practically available spatial data be available to all parties concerned.
