De Hoop Project
OBJECTIVE:
Job creation and road maintenance at De Hoop Nature Reserve.
START:
2003
END:
2004
STATUS:
Underway
DESCRIPTION:

The Department of Transport and Public Works initiated a R1.5 million project to upgrade damaged roads in the De Hoop Nature Reserve near Bredasdorp. According to Herkie Bouwer, project co-ordinator, rain caused the damage

Work has been created for 16 jobless people from the nearby Slangrivier community. According to Braam Auret, contracted civil engineer on the project, the jobs are temporary but the workers will at least earn salaries for a few months until the project is completed next year.

The workers were taught to embed concrete blocks like a puzzle in the damaged roads. The blocks are then fastened with steel wire.
