The Department of Community Safety envisages a future in which the citizens of the Western Cape are free from the fear of crime.

Some of the activities that the Department is involved in are:

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

The Department of Community Safety has taken over the Traffic Management from the Department of Transport. Through this law enforcement agency the Department can fight crime on our roads and work towards creating a safer environment. The Department is dedicated to enhancing road safety and traffic safety awareness.

CRIME PREVENTION

The Department coordinates social crime prevention interventions in the Provincial and Local Government spheres. Provincial projects include projects to support neighbourhood watch organisations, prevent truancy in schools, support victims of crime and build the resilience factors of children at risk. Several institutions have recognised the Department's efforts to mobilise communities against the abuse of children and to coordinate crime prevention structures dealing with child abuse.

The Department focuses its crime prevention activities on seven development nodes within the metropolitan area, namely:

  • Khayelitsha
  • Mitchell's Plein
  • Elsies Rivier
  • Bonteheuwel
  • Manenberg
  • Hanover Park
  • Phillipi East/Nyanga corridor.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

The Department is also involved in providing operational support in the form of the training of Municipal Police Officers, assisting the Community Patrol Officer's Scheme and the accreditation and training of Neighbourhood Watches.

CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT FUNCTION

The Department's function of civilian oversight to ensure the improvement of service delivery in the SA Police Service and to determine the Provinces Policing Needs and Priorities is also high on the priority list and efforts to strengthen that Directorate has also been approved.

COMMUNITY SAFETY INFORMATION CENTRE

The Department has also established a Community Safety Information Centre, to collect and analyse crime as well as road accident information in order to assist with the developing of operational plans. These plans would be executed to ensure a safer environment.
