WESTERN CAPE SOCIAL CAPITAL NETWORK: OVERVIEW

What is Social Capital all about?

There are many definitions of social capital.

Simply, it is about developing the potential relationships with people around us: those in or communities, in our schools, at the workplace, even with our neighbours.

The idea that creating social capital (i.e. creating networks) will strengthen civil society underlies the social policies of many countries and is aimed at bridging deepening social divisions - the core idea being that the denser and more diverse the networks in a community, the more likely that its citizens will be able to cooperate for mutual benefit.

This web space will serve as a hub for people who work within the social capital environment, mainly focusing on the needs of the citizens of the Western Cape. This is a space to collaborate, share ideas and achieve the goals set out in the various policies, as shown in practical projects.

It is a space for practitioners of social capital across health, education and social sciences to learn, network and celebrate their work. • more

Social Capital in the PGWC

The South African Constitution aims to build a humane, stable and just society, to harmonize social policies with measures to promote economic development.

The Western Cape refines this philosophy in it's integrated shared-growth vision and strategy, Growth and Development Strategy. Social Capital Formation is one of the lead strategies and informs all the work of the Provincial Government.

The strategy was launched in October 2005 at UWC. But what does mean for operations in departments? How does the strategy affect other strategies, programmes and projects?
