Target group Facilitators are drawn from the broader community and include youth leaders, members of the Department of Social Development, the South African Police Services, the Department of Education and people from the non-governmental sector. An initial group of 10 facilitators from the various District Offices were trained in Ke Moja methodology and then tasked with using it as the basis of a plan to roll out drug education throughout their districts. Some facilitators decided to train more facilitators, while others ran information programmes for children themselves. Course format and duration Facilitator training takes place over three days. The training methodology involves learning through experience and takes the form of discussion, group sessions, demonstrations and presentations.Course content The course focuses on the psychological and physical toll substance abuse takes on a person, the treatment options available to substance abusers and the life skills needed to cope with pressure.Outcome By July 2006, a total of 310 facilitators from throughout the Western Cape had been trained in the Ke Moja methodology and had gone on to educate 700 children between the ages of 10 and 18 on substance abuse. The rollout continues at each of the 16 District Offices of the provincial Department of Social Development. Partners Ke Moja was developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), National Department of Social Development and Miles and Associates International - Success by Choice (MAI-SBC).
