THE NOBEL SQUARE PROJECT

Nobel Square is a sculptural square currently being developed in the historical heart of Cape Town, South Africa, and will honour this country's four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and its extraordinary achievement of peace and democracy. The square is located in Cape Town's waterfront development, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, and will contain sculptures of:

• the late Nkosi Albert Luthuli
• Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
• former State President F.W. de Klerk
• former President Nelson Mandela

A fifth sculpture will also be developed; named Peace and Democracy, which is a narrative work acknowledging the contribution of women and children to the attainment of peace in South Africa.

The Nobel Square Project was started by the Western Cape Government, in partnership with the V & A Waterfront, in 2002, and officially launched in December 2003 at a ceremony attended by the three surviving Laureates and Dr Albertina Luthuli, representing her late father, as well as Norway's Ambassador to South Africa.

The Project enjoys the blessing of the Norwegian Nobel Institute.
