International Computer Driver's Licence (ICDL) Course for FET Educators
INKCAZELO:
Opportunity for Educators to Earn the International Computer Driver's Licence (ICDL)

A donation of ICDL Skills Logbooks and tests has been made to the WCED. In addition, iThemba LABS in Faure have offered to train 180 educators and supervise the testing of the four ICDL modules. These donations grant educators the opportunity to obtain the ICDL Start qualification at no cost.

WHAT DOES THE ICDL COURSE ENTAIL?

These logbooks and free examinations will be allocated to:

  • Educators at Further Education and Training (FET) institutions, specifically those educators who will teach the CAT and IT learning areas in 2006,
  • Educators who teach the 2006 FET learning areas that will require the use of ICT's, e.g. Accountancy, Geography, Engineering Studies, etc.

Nine training courses are to be offered between April and October 2005 (see table below). The courses are made up as follows:

  • The first eight courses are offered bi-weekly (once every two weeks), after school hours from 15:00 to 17:00. Each of these courses therefore, runs over 10 weeks.
  • The ninth course is offered in a block week during the last week of the mid-year vacation, from 08:00 to 16:00. Delegates will receive training for a module in the morning, and write the examination on that module in the afternoon (this is for more competent users).

The ICDL Start certificate consists of four modules:

  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentations
  • Email & Internet

Only 180 educators can be accommodated in this pilot project, 20 educators per course. Selection for participation therefore, will be on a first come, first served basis with participants further vetted depending on the availability of seats.
