Subsistence Programmes and Skills Training for the Poor

If you are struggling to find a job, a subsistence programme can help you support yourself by, for example, giving you access to a piece of land and teaching you how to grow your own food, so making it less urgent for you to find permanent employment. Subsistence programmes also offer training in "soft" skills such as communication and conflict resolution, so that you can also make money by starting your own micro-business. Subsistence programmes are run by a range of non-profit organisations, with the assistance of and funding from the provincial Department of Social Development. These non-profit organisations act as "bankers" for programme participants, giving them seed funding and resources such as land, and helping them manage their finances until they are on their feet. |
