Masakh' iSizwe Centre of Excellence: Student Support Programmes
INKCAZELO:
The Western Cape Province Department of Transport & Public Works established the Masakh' iSizwe (Let's Build the Nation) Centre of Excellence at the beginning of 2006. The centre aims to develop professionals in engineering and the built environment fields and offers bursaries for study towards a degree or higher diploma in the following disciplines:
  • Architecture
  • Construction Management
  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Quantity Surveying
  • Town & Regional Planning
In addition, student support programmes are also provided for learners. These include experiential learning and student support sessions.

Experiential Learning

The purpose of the Experiential Learning component of the programme is to provide bursary students opportunities to take their compulsory practical training and vacation work with the Department of Transport and Public Works. Students are placed either within the department, local municipalities or at companies in the private sector.

Key competencies attained during the Experiential Learning component are:

  • Developing skills related to their field of study
  • Enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical work situations
  • Inculcating a professional work ethic
  • Exposing students to specific functions undertaken by the Department

The placements of students are generally for a period prescribed by the tertiary institutions and vary between 3-12 months. Students are paid a monthly allowance based on their NQF-levels. They participate in an induction process initially and are then placed with a supervisor/mentor on site.

Student Support

Regular meetings are held with the bursary students during the academic year to ensure they are coping with their course work. Students get guidance on to deal with the challenges they face on campuses and they are introduced to mechanisms, such as student counselling, that could help them. Interactive student sessions help students establish a good support base they can use on their campuses.

Regular meetings with the Deans of various Engineering faculties are held to ensure that adequate support mechanisms are in place for the students. Additional programmes focussing on the development of leadership, citizenship and excellence in learning will are planned as part of the student support programme.
