This in recognition and gratitude of Mr Tinto's unique and meritorious service to the province and country in achieving democracy and freedom and his strong stand for non-racialism. Mr Christmas Tinto received both National and Provincial Honours Awards in his late life and it would be fitting in his death that these honours be sustained.
The Premier has voiced concern that particularly the media have not yet grasped the significance of the life and contribution of a leading, yet humble figure such as Com T in the Western Cape and nationally. The hope is that all citizens of the province will recognise the role played by figures such as Christmas Tinto and many other activists of his generation in establishing equality, justice, dignity and freedom for all in our nation.
The accordance of a 'Special Official Funeral' will allow the Provincial Government to assist in covering the costs of a fitting funeral service [scheduled for Saturday in Guguletu] and mean that flags on all official buildings in the Western Cape be flown at half-mast from midnight tonight to midnight on Saturday. The latter would be a first nationally as far as we are aware at present.
Once word is received from the Presidency on this request as made by Premier Rasool, further information and details will be made available.
