This event, which will be repeated accross the Province is the first step towards the aim of vaccinating at least 75% of cats and dogs in targeted areas within the Province, by the end of the year.
Rabies is a fatal infectious disease in animals caused by a virus that can be transferred to humans. During this campaign the Department focuses on cats and dogs to create an immune disease barrier to protect human beings.
The campaign also aims to create awareness regarding human health issues connected to the presence of animals in human settlements. For this reason pets were also dewormed.
"Humans can contract this disease if bitten by any infected animal," says Dr Gideon Brückner, Director of Veterinary Services of the Department. "People should always be aware of tame animals that suddenly become aggressive or wild animals that appear tame."
Similar campaigns will be held in various areas in the near future.
