The Nurse Training School of Tygerberg Hospital excelled once again in the South African Nursing Council examinations with a 100 % pass rate, with five students scoring full honours and nine who passed with distinctions.

With their motto, "Excellence in training", the school has set a record of excellence in theoretical as well as practical training by maintaining an almost 100 % pass rate in the external South African Nursing Council's examination through the years.

This could only be achieved through the outstanding dedication and keen interest that the lecturing personnel take in each individual learner. Through intensive remedial programmes on a one to one basis slow progressing learners are supported by the lecturers. For the cognitively advanced learners, there is always other challenges e.g. experiential learning, to satisfy their need. Year after year the Nursing School delivered confident, skillful and knowledgeable enrolled nurses, who are the proud products of this small education unit.

On 1 February 1997 the first group of seventeen enrolled auxiliary nurses, embarked on the one year bridging course according to the South African Nursing Council's Regulation 2175 - sixteen from Tygerberg's staff and one male nurse from Lentegeur Hospital. All learners passed - 14 with full honours and nine with subject distinctions.

The groups that followed achieved outstanding results. On several occasions, the school delivered the candidates with the highest theoretical or practical marks nationally. This was acknowledged by the Provincial Minister of Health's Office in the form of a certificate to the learners.
