In the light of the increase in violence against women and children on the Cape Flats, Metro Police are embarking on a STAY SAFE campaign to raise awareness and help parents to educate and empower their children to take control of their own safety.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Councillor Dumisani Ximbi will officially launch the campaign in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain at 14:00 on Tuesday, 3 April 2007.

During this campaign, children will engage in activities that will expose them to issues that affect them and their peers. Communities will be invited to get involved in positive activities and parents will be encouraged to be more vigilant when it comes to the safety of their children.

Nowellen Petersen, Metro Police Media Liaison Officer, said: "The scourge of violence against women and children, particularly girl children, has increased on the Cape Flats. Communities are being kept hostage in their own homes and the recent crimes against our children were captured on the front pages of all newspapers. Our children aren't safe anymore and communities are tired of being imprisoned in their own homes. This is why Metro police are embarking on this campaign".
