Iqhayiya Secondary School received a pass mark of 39.62% in 2005, but with good leadership managed to up their marks to 94.44% last year. For this they have received a special acknowledgement at the Premier's Awards Ceremony last year.

Manenberg High School showed good improvement in the last three years, from 36.94% in 2004, to 45.35% in 2005; and then 85.29% last year. Perhaps the work of the Proudly Manenberg Campaign played a role. However, the problem is that the school could not deliver a single endorsement and this must challenged.

Stellenberg High School received the Premier's Awards for Excellence in Mathematics HG, for producing the largest number of Maths HG passes; for best improvement in Physical Science HG and SG over a three year period, while maintaining or increasing enrolment levels of full-time candidates in Grade 12.

  • Anine Suzanne Pentz obtained the highest score in Afrikaans First Language HG
  • Herman Simon Schaaf received a meritorious academic award
  • Four candidates made it to the Top 20 List, including the top candidate Johannes Paulus Du Plessis

Westerford High School is one of ten schools which received the Premier's Awards for Excellence in academic results over the three years 2004 to 2006 on at least the following criteria:

  • consistency in number of candidates (no decline of numbers beyond 10%)
  • an overall pass rate of 100%
  • a matriculation endorsement rate in excess of 70%
  • a combined merit and distinction pass rate of at least 60%

Stephen Road Primary School is the school where 11-year-old Dane Darries was stabbed to death 14 times with a sharp object, no arrests have yet been made. The government wants to reassure the community and school that it has not forgotten the brutal killing and that the investigation is making progress, albeit slowly. It also wants to commend the principal on his creative thinking to combat vandalism and theft, having asked an armed response security company to base themselves on the premises.

Range High School showed steady progress, from 76.09% in 2004, to 86.67% in 2005, but then dropped to 63.27% last year (which is 23.4% percentage points) in spite of having only 31 candidates last year. This school faces challenges of theft and vandalism, as well as other social issues.

Dr Nelson R Mandela High School has shown some signs of potential, but cannot break through the 60% plateau. Their results the last three years were: 53.9% in 2004; 40.53% in 2005; and 59.02% in 2006.

Elsies River Secondary School received Premier's Award for Excellence of outcomes within the context in which the school operates. In this category awards to be made to schools where the academic performance over the three years 2004 to 2006 illustrates consistently meritorious outcomes relative to the contexts within which the school operates and where there is a consistency in number of candidates (at least 95% of previous years) Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material.

Beauvallion Secondary Scool has in the last three years consistently under performed with marks of 60%; 47.27% in 2004; 47.37% in 2005; and 52.08% in 2006.

This school wants to include in their curriculum hospitality studies, and wants to start a food security programme, with gardening etc.

Ikamvalethu High School struggles with pass rates of 37.16% in 2004; 57.87% in 2005; and 51.16% last year. They face challenges of huge classes and need encouragement to break through the 60% ceiling.
