Congratulations to Swartland and the City of Cape Town on being judged as the cleanest Town and Metro in the country. This is not the first time that Western Cape Municipalities have shone at the national competition as we strive on delivering on our promise of creating a Sustainable Home for All.
In previous years, the provincial round of the Competition was won by Knysna Municipality (2002) and Overstrand Municipality (2003). Runners up included Cape Agulhas and Outshoorn Municipalities in 2002 and Knysna and Outshoorn Municipalities in 2003.
Last year the Overstrand and the City of Cape Town won the National Competition.
We believe it is important that our municipalities share best practice, not only with local authorities in the Western Cape, but also throughout the country.
The Cleanest Town Competition is really about ensuring that all our communities, especially the poor, live in dignified, clean, healthy places.
While we celebrate our successes we must acknowledge that much more needs to be done, especially in poor communities in terms of access to clean and healthy environments.
The western cape government is committed to working with all municipalities to ensure that we achieve this.
