14 uNovemba 2007
UMTHOMBO WEENDABA INkulumbuso yeNtshona Koloni (uRhulumente Wephondo leNtshona Kapa)
Members of the media are invited to attend a 'Tik off - There is Hope' campaign press conference to be addressed by the Acting Premier of the Western Cape, Leonard Ramatlakane. The head of FNB Western Cape, Ashiek Manie, who today(Wedn) pledged R200 000 in support of the campaign as a sign of the banks commitment to community care and youth development, will also address the press conference(see attached presser).

In a bid to bring about much-needed awareness and education to counter the scourge of Tik, the Acting Premier will unveil a month long awareness campaign targetting some of the Western Cape Government's 21 priority areas.

The Western Cape Government has identified Crystal Methamphetamine, better known as 'tik', as one of the most serious challenges facing communities across the province. Acting Premier Ramatlakane said: "Since Premier Ebrahim Rasool declared war earlier this year on drugs, gangs and crime in the Western Cape, we have made significant strides in cracking down on the production, distribution and sale of Crystal Methamphetamine, better known as Tik. We announced earlier this week that 6 499grams of Tik were seized by police, four Tik factories were closed and 3 818 drug-related arrests made in the six months since April alone.

"However, Tik is still the drug of choice in this province and we are determined to continue our crack down. But whilst government and the police are hard at work putting pressure on the drug lords, we cannot and will not succeed if communities do not join hands with us. The ' Tik Off - There is Hope' is crucial if we are to educate the youth about the dangers of taking this devastating drug, and others."
