Like the Springboks who are still celebrating their World Championship victory, Transport Month saw officials of the Department of Transport and Public Works emerging as winners due to the various projects that were initiated and in some cases completed in an effort to create a better transport system for all in the Western Cape.

Many schools in the Western Cape are benefitting from Public Transport's initiative to donate hundreds of bicycles to the needy children who have to travel long distances to school. According to Kenny Booysen, Senior Manager: Business Development, it is the Department's intention to shorten the learners' traveling time so that more time can be spent in a learning environment. "This is part of the Shova Kalula (peddle easy) initiative and focuses on bringing non-motorised transport to needy women, children and farm workers" he said.

The bicycles will be kept and managed by the schools on behalf of the learners. Bicycles have already been distributed in the West Coast, Winelands, George and Beaufort West areas.

Other parts of the province will shortly be visited by Public Transport officials.
