The Coastal Zone Bill requires that each coastal province compile a Coastal Management Programme (CMP) which outlines the vision for the management of the coastal zone in the province, sets out coastal management objectives, priorities and strategies, and defines performance indicators to measure progress. Accordingly, the Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning commissioned the Environmental Evaluation Unit, of the University of Cape Town, to compile a provincial coastal management programme for the Western Cape.
