Human Rights in 10 years of democracy - paying tribute to two exceptional statesmen - Mr Nelson Mandela and Mr FW De Klerk

Today - with the celebration of Human Rights Day tribute must be paid to all those who have committedthemselves to the ideal of a new South Africa. Today I want to pay tribute to two exceptional statesmen andNobel Peace Prize Laureates who made it possible for us to have 10 years of democracy and a Human rightsDay to celebrate - Mr Nelson Mandela and Mr FW De Klerk in their extraordinary lives and bold initiativesturned a possible state of anarchy around and made democracy and true human rights for every SouthAfrican possible.

Die destydse President, mnr FW De Klerk het reeds op 2 Februarie 1990 sy epogmakende toespraak in dieParlement gemaak dat hy Suid-Afrika gaan lei op die pad na Vryheid. Some years ago, Nelson Mandela, said: "The time has come for Africa to take full responsibility for her woes; to use the immense collectivewisdom she possesses to make a reality of the ideal of the African renaissance whose time has come." - Wehave decided to take responsibility.

God blessed our country with exceptional leaders in Nelson Mandela and FW De Klerk when they wereneeded most. The two arch enemies embraced the changes with the necessary vigour - Old hatreds andbitter animosity were left behind because millions of followers on both sides yearned for a new South Africa. These two leaders deserve our respect and tribute. These two leaders changed our world for the better andthey gave us dignity and international recognition. But most importantly - each South African has been givenbasic human rights which must be treasured. The fact that so many political parties can participate in thisyear's election, the fact that oppostion leaders can voice an opinion, the fact that we can differ from eachother, the fact that we have an open society and the fact that we have a free media can all be attributed tobasic human rights.

The Western Cape has become a province of hope and of opportunity. If you are willing and able I want toinvite you - if you are prepared to work, and if you are prepared to dream there are new unlimitedopportunities within your grasp.

One need not wait for a job - if we all use our entrepreneurial skills we can create our own economic activity!

There are new opportunities in Agriculture and Food Processing
There are new opportunities in the Tourism Infrastructure industry
There are new opportunities in the Mining, Gas, Petro chemicals, andEnergy industry
There are new opportunities in the Textile, Clothing, Craft and Leather industry and'
There are new opportunities in the Film and Media Industry
