No Greater Achievement than Building A Home for All in the Western Cape
YI: Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Premier of the Western Cape
KWI-: The Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, during the Western Cape Provincial Celebrations of Human Rights Day
22 uMatshi 2004
Today we are here to celebrate freedom and human rights.

Today we are here to remember courage.

Today we are here to give thanks for sacrifice.

Today we come together as the people and the communities of the Western Cape.

We are one family, one people, united under one South African patriotism.

Visitors to the Western Cape often wonder how we have built a province that is so successful. They see our people and our communities working together, and they ask us how we have made this possible.

The answer is simple. It's the same reason that we are all here today and it is our most valuable achievement. It's because the Western Cape is now a home for all the people. Die Wes-Kaap is 'n tuiste vir al die mense. INtshona Koloni likhaya lomntu wonke. Abantsundu, abamhlophe, abebala, namaNdiya, amadoda, nabafazi.

This morning we saw the real proof of how far we have come since 1994. Our Freedom Parade brought thousands of people, coloured, white, black and Indian, from their homes, down Klipfontein Road to these celebrations. From Gugulethu in the East, to Hanover Park on the flats, to Rondebosch in the West, Klipfontein Road is like a ribbon of steel that joins our communities in the same way that the NNP/ANC Coalition of Hope joins our people.

Gister was Nasionale Menseregtedag.

In ten years we have had great successes. Many more people have water and electricity. Many more people have houses. There are more clinics and more schools. But it is not enough. We will work together to make sure the next ten years are even better. We owe it to our children.

Kweli shumi leminyaka, sibe nezinto ezininzi, ezibe yimpumelelo. Bandile abantu abafakelwe amanzi nombane. Bandile nabantu abafumene izindlu. Kukho iiklinikhi nezikolo ezongeziweyo. Kodwa ke oku akukoneli. Siya kusoloko sisebenzisana ,ukuqinisekisa ukuba, le minyaka ilishumi izayo, iba ngcono nangakumbi. Kufanele sikwenze oku ngenxa yabantwana bethu.

Too many people think that human rights are just words on paper. Too many people believe that days like this one are just good excuses to be on holiday. They are wrong.

Our people and our NNP/ANC Government knows that human rights are really about freedom.

The freedom of a young child to play and learn without the pain of hunger in her belly.

The freedom of a mother to walk out of her door, down her street and through the park without the fear of rape and murder at every step.

Die vryheid van 'n Christen en 'n Moslem en 'n Jood om openlik hulle geloof te beoefen.

Die vryheid van 'n pa of 'n ma om werk te kry, 'n lewe te maak en vir hulle gesin kos op die tafel te sit.

These are the freedoms and the human rights that we celebrate today.

This is why our NNP/ANC Government has put another 6000 police on our streets and why we have just celebrated the safest festive season in ten years.

This is why we will work to create at least 100 000 permanent new jobs for the Western Cape in the next 5 years, to attract another R5 billion in new investment, and to create another 120 000 short-term jobs in our public works programmes.

Dit is hoekom die NNP en die ANC sal saamwerk in Regering - om die Wes-Kaap te bou tot 'n werklike tuiste vir almal, 'n Węreldklasprovinsie wat omgee vir al sy mense.

Eyona nto ibalulekileyo kuthi, ngabantu bethu. Abantu bafuna umsebenzi. Iintsapho zethu zifuna izindlu. Abantwana bethu bafuna izikolo. Yiloo nto sisebenza sibambisene singuRhulumente.

I want to thank each and every person who is here to celebrate with us today. We are showing that the Western Cape is no longer an island. We are a dynamic part of South Africa, often breaking new ground, and finding new solutions for the rest of the country.

You deserve a real voice in Government. Jy verdien 'n ware stem in Regering. Nifanelwe ukuba nelona lizwi liya kunimela kuRhulumente.

We give you the commitment of our NNP/ANC Government that we will not rest until every person in the Western Cape is able to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we have created together.
