Together, the Provincial Library Service of the Western Cape and local authorities provide library services to 1,229,715 citizens who are members of libraries in the province. By the end of 2004, there were 309 libraries affiliated to the Provincial Library Service. Approximately 26% of the total population of the Western Cape are library members and library services of the province boast an infrastructure that compares favourably with the best in the world. An extensive range of library materials are provided on loan to public libraries by the Library Service. Books, periodicals, newspapers, CDs and videos, professional publications and promotional materials are supplied.
